​Mothers who give birth in a hospital will receive a phone call from a public health nurse within 24-48 hours after discharge from hospital. Birthing parents who receive care from a midwife will receive care in the first few days from their midwife and will be contacted by a Public Health Nurse within six to eight weeks.
In the Prenatal & Early Years Program, Public Health Nurses provide nursing services to answer questions about birthing parent, baby, or family health and provide access to public health services including:
- prenatal support,
- after birth care of a new baby,
- child health clinics (immunization),
- breastfeeding support,
- telephone support and advice,
- capacity building,
- parenting support
- screening and referral to developmental screening
