Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills Training

Provided by Mood Disorders Association of BC

A program focused on skills training, a component of DBT, to help individuals learn DBT and apply it to their lives.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy or DBT is a mindfulness-based, cognitive behavioural treatment. DBT is recognized as the gold standard treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD), but research has shown that DBT is also effective in treating many other disorders such as substance dependence, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), ADHD and eating disorders.

This program focuses on skills training, a critical component of DBT. There are 4 modules: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness. New participants can start during the Mindfulness module. The focus of each session is on learning, practicing and eventually bringing each skill into daily life. DBT classes are not therapy sessions, in which participants share personal issues privately with a counsellor. These are learning sessions, in which participants may share what they need to share in order to improve their understanding the DBT skills.

The DBT group program meets once a week for 2 hours. The total program length is 24 weeks (6 months). All sessions are currently held via ZOOM.

Referral required. With the referral, the DBT course is covered by MSP.
