BC Centre for Sexual Medicine

Provided by Vancouver Coastal Health

A team of psychiatrists, sexual medicine physicians, and specialized nurses provide assessment and treatment of sexual disorders to individuals and couples of all ages. Located in the UBC Hospital.
Services are divided into three areas of treatment.
Sexual Dysfunction:
  • difficulties with sexual interest and arousal
  • experience of pain associated with sexual activity
  • problems in completing chosen sexual acts
  • sexual or reproductive difficulties associated with psychiatric or medical illness
Reproductive Health:
  • this clinic accepts primarily male patients with infertility resulting from ejaculatory disorders
Additional Limited Assessment and Treatment Services:
  • paraphilias (unusual or abnormal sexual interests or behaviours)
  • sexuality concerns related to intersex disorders (biological disorders of genital anatomy present from birth)
  • priority is currently given to those who have pain or other sex-functioning problems with intercourse

Eligibility: Clients must reside within BC/Yukon Territory. Mood disorders need to be stabilized before addressing sexual dysfunctions. Similarly, relationship discord needs to be addressed before assessment in the sexual medicine clinic.

Referrals of patients with the following will not be accepted:
  • Untreated medical conditions, including drug or alcohol dependency
  • Sexual dysfunctions primarily due to relationship turmoil in which counseling for the latter would be expected to resolve the sexual concerns
  • Sexual dysfunctions due to psychiatric or personality disorders in which treatment of the primary condition would be expected to resolve the sexual concerns
  • Sexual problems that have been addressed by other professionals but the patient has been noncompliant with treatment (i.e., low motivation)
  • Concerns centered on "sexual orientation" or "coming out"
  • Initial or primary therapy for sexual victimization/abuse
  • Paraphilias in which criminal charges have been laid or are pending.
