Mental Health & Substance Use Outpatient Services - Vancouver General Hospital

Provided by Vancouver Coastal Health

Provides psychiatric consultation, group therapy, rehabilitation, short term psychotherapy for people with suicidal ideation, bereaved by suicide, or concerned others, to individuals who live with mental illness and substance use issues.
Core services provided over 6-12 months:
  • 72 hour response when clinically indicated for Short term assessment and treatment and crisis stabilization following a psychiatric assessment
  • Psychiatric Assessments (Diagnostic clarification, consultations, treatment recommendations)
  • Group therapy: Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders: targets Depression & Anxiety and Interpersonal Psychotherapy: depression the result of interpersonal losses, role conflict and life transitions, compassion focused therapy for anxiety/depression.
  • Psychotherapy/psychoeducational services for clients with suicidal ideation, people bereaved by suicide. Capacity to include services in Cantonese and Spanish.
  • Rehab support for behavioral activation and functional assessments of people accessing our core services
  • Community education: Includes suicide and bereavement education and follow up, and anti-stigma education

  • Referral: Referrals are processed at the Access & Assessment Centre
    Eligibility: For adults 19+ years old. Referrals must reside in the Vancouver area. For emergency services in Vancouver, call Access and Assessment Centre (AAC) at 604-875-8289.
    For emergency services in Richmond, call Mental Health Emergency Services at 604-244-5562.

    Patient Instructions: Please bring a list of your medications, supplements or vitamins that you may be taking. Please arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment as there are forms to be completed. Please be aware this is a teaching hospital and medical students/residents may be involved with your care.
